Serving Rhode Island Neighbors Since 1853 — More Than 170 Years

Back to Blog

For more than 170 years, this organization has stood alongside Rhode Island's most vulnerable residents — through wars, recessions, and generational change. Their story is one of quiet, steady service.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Rhode Island was established in 1853, making it one of the oldest continuously operating charitable organizations in the state. In the years since, it has weathered the Civil War, two World Wars, the Great Depression, and every economic and social upheaval in between — always returning to the same fundamental mission: helping neighbors in need.

That kind of institutional endurance is rare. It speaks to something deeper than organizational management — it speaks to a community that has consistently chosen to show up for its most vulnerable members, generation after generation.

For veterans, this history matters. Many of the veterans MB2B serves are navigating challenges that have deep roots — housing instability, financial hardship, family stress — that require more than a single intervention. They need a network of organizations with staying power, organizations that will still be there next year and the year after.

St. Vincent de Paul Rhode Island is that kind of organization. And for veterans and families who need a hand with the basics — food, clothing, household essentials, utility assistance — they are a trusted and proven resource.

We are grateful for their 170-plus years of service to Rhode Island, and for their continued partnership in supporting our veteran community.
